Out of all the things that Oliver had thought would bring out Lena’s ever-elusive emotional side over the years, never had he thought it would be high-school football. But when the Huskies finally took the lead with a running pass touchdown to Tommy Zimmerman, she stood next to him with her hands in the air, screaming at the top of her lungs with the rest of the crowd in the bleachers.

Suddenly her arms were around his neck. He turned his face, and before he could say anything, she kissed him.

On the lips.

Oliver froze. By the time what was happening registered, she’d whipped back around and continued cheering. Like it hadn’t fazed her at all.

But it struck him with the force of an avalanche.

Lena Larson had kissed him.

For the first time in his life, he watched the game but couldn’t concentrate on anything.

Anything except her.

They found their seats once again as the row in front of them sat down. Oliver grabbed her hand and held it. She didn’t pull away. He didn’t dare look at her. Just relished the feel of her soft skin, her long fingers entwined with his.

He was falling in love with her.

There had been some sizzle with Jalisa at one point, but with the drinking, he didn’t remember a whole lot, and it certainly hadn’t lasted. This was different. Lena knew him. She’d seen him at his worst and she was still here. She’d believed in his idea for the pet adoption, listened to his input. She was smart and caring, even though she hid her affectionate side well. She challenged him to bring his A-game to whatever he did.

After the kick, she leaned over. “I’m hungry. Think we can get those hot dogs now?”

Yes. Food. Something he could do to keep his mind occupied. Because all he wanted to do was a little kissing of his own, and this was not the place.

“I’ll go grab us something to eat.”

“I’ll come with you this time. The quilt can save our spot.”

He wasn’t going to argue with that. Especially if Misty was still on the prowl. He kept hold of Lena’s hand as he led her down the bleacher steps and to the concession stand. Even then he didn’t let go. He stood there with what he knew was a giddy grin, waiting in line.

“Oliver?”

Ollie turned. His mouth went dry.

Grayson.

His brother stood there in jeans and a light-brown Stetson. Grayson had filled out since his high-school graduation. His tan face under the hat had matured, but he still had those same serious eyes.

Lena nudged him. He should probably say something.

“Hi.” It came out raspy and thin.

Grayson nodded. Beth Strauss stood by his side, watching the two of them intently.

Oliver swallowed and found his voice again. “I’ve been wanting to talk to you.”

“So you said.”

“I, uh, think I’m going to go find the ladies’ room. Lena, want to come with me?” Beth asked.

The girls walked off, and the men continued to stare each other down.

Oliver stepped out of the concession line.
